birdshooter > Dawn at Maroon Bells
I visited Maroon Bells three days and took many exposures with three different cameras; Nikon D200 with a 12-24 f/4 lens, Leica Digilux 3 with a 14-50mm lens, and a Canon Powershot G9. The use of a tripod is essential for sharp pictures especially using an f22 aperature. Each performed excellently.
birdshooter > When you find a great landscape scene be sure to take both horizontal and vertical format. You just never know when someone might want a vertical and you don't have one.
birdshooter > This was taken my first day at Maroon Bells, Monday, and most people would be satisfied with this photo of the Bells. I thought I could do better and knew that if there were some clouds in the sky it would really help fill in the void in the sky. That became a reality when I returned on Friday, 9-19, and found the sky beginning to cloud up. Many photographers left before the clouds moved into the picture and they missed a great opportunity. One of the traits of a good landscape photographer is patience.
birdshooter > One of many shots of Maroon Bells I took the last day there. Notice all the rocks and logs in the foreground. In most cases you want some foreground but I thought it took away from the majesty of the scene. I found another spot without all the debris.
birdshooter > Probably the best photo I took at Maroon Bells of my three visits during the week. This shot was taken with a Nikon D200, Nikon 12-24 f/4 lens @ 12mm, Moose Peterson warming-polarizing filter 77mm, on a Slik carbon fiber tripod with a Slik ball head. The exposure was at f22 at 1/10th/sec with ISO 125.

If you look at some of the other shots I took earlier in the week you'll notice there are no clouds. On Friday, clouds began to appear in the sky late in the morning. The lake had been lined with photographers most of whom had folded up their tripods grabbed their cameras and left. A few of us stuck around and were rewarded with these puffy white clouds to fil in the blank blue sky. Patience is rewarding.
birdshooter > "Maroon Bells through the Trees" Look for different compositions when photographing the landscape. Here the aspen treens provide a frame for the mountains.
birdshooter > The aspen leaves become translucent when you position yourself where the tree is backlit. The light becomes golden and makes a great photograph.
birdshooter > The remains of an old gold mine southeast of Aspen. The aspen trees are just beginning to change.
birdshooter > Mt. Aspen has many ski runs and is the principle draw of people to Aspen during the winter.
