Kleb Woods = Bus Trip to High Island & Bolivar Peninsula 5-15-09 : The last bus trip of the year for Kleb Woods took us to High Island on May 15th, Friday. We visited Boy Scout Woods first where we greeted by several singing Northern cardinals. We saw a Scaled dove, Redstart, Yellow warbler, Orchard oriole and Grey catbird at the drip. The star of the day was the Common yellowthroat found along the boardwalk to the marsh. He was really singing his little lungs out. We then took a tour of the High Island peninsula checking out some of the marshes and eating lunch on the air conditioned bus. The highlight of that stop was the Black tern, a flock of 50+ which was in breeding plumage. We then drove back to the town of High Island to Smith Oaks Sanctuary and the Rookery. The mosquitoes and horse flies were very hungry and the insect repellent did not seen to deter them from biting. All and all a great trip put together by Kleb Woods director, Fred Collins.
