Owls are silent, predatory animals. Owls are difficult to photograph since most of the time they only move about during the night. I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to photograph these owls.

birdshooter > Barred Owl
This is one of my favorite photographs and one of the first I ever took as a bird photographer. I happened to be walking the Red Buckeye Trail in eastern part of Brazos Bend State Park in mid-Oct and saw this Barred Owl perched. I approached him quietly with a Nikon F100 with a 300mm lens. His attention was focused on the ground. I snapped several slides of him before he leaped off the branch to the ground and onto a green lizzard. He took the lizzard up about 40 feet in an oak and consumed him. His flight down to the ground and up into the oak tree was as silent as a butterfly. They are amazing animals.
birdshooter > This little Burrowing Owl was photographed in Williamson County, TX from my bus window on a Kleb Woods field trip.
birdshooter > Word of a Burrowing Owl at a Texas City home construction site in February of 2004 got out over the internet. I followed the directions and found this little guy. He was very photogenic posing on a fence with a sign that read "BURROWING OWL".
birdshooter > The Eastern Screech Owl is a fierce little predator. His call often signals other songbirds for "mobbing" him. His camoflaged feathers hide him from other birds so that he can sleep during the day. This Eastern Screech Owl was photographed in Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park.
birdshooter > This Barred Owl was hunting during the middle of the day at Brazos Bend State Park. From this perch he leaped to the ground and grabbed a green lizzard which he had for lunch.

birdshooter > This Eastern Screech Owl (red phase) is a resident of Russ Pitman Park in Bellaire, TX. He took a peek at the photographer just before the shutter opened.
birdshooter > This Great Gray Owl was photographed with just minutes of daylight left. All I had in the my Nikon was Fuji Velvia with an ISO set at 40. The Great Gray is the largest owl in North America. This magnificant animal is so huge I was amazed it could fly. He was photographed in Yellowstone National Park.
birdshooter > This Barn Owl was found on the Warren Ranch on the Katy Prairie. The owner was kind enought to let our group come on the ranch to view the owl. This female had two fledglings in the attic of an old wooden barn. The image was taken with a 500mm Nikon lens and Fuji S3 digital camera.
