Exceptional travel photos are taken by people who have a passion for photography and a desire to take great photos. Take your camera with you everywhere. The one time you see some native in a gorgeous costume or a smiling face is the time you'll thank yourself for taking the camera.

birdshooter > A light weight carbon fiber like the Slik Pro 614CF with a sturdy, adjustable and lockable ball head will provide a stable platform for your camera.  I mounted a small hook on the bottom of the center column and hang my backpack to make it really solid.

birdshooter > If you travel up north to Alaska, rain is not a possibility, it is a sure thing.  I just use some plastic bags over my telephoto lens attached with rubber bands.
birdshooter > Do some online research of the places you are traveling to, ie; Google or Yahoo.  Search a photo website like Smugmug, PBase, or Photo.net and look at what other photographers have photographed.  You can get some ideas of what to photograph from postcards of the place.  Don't get caught in the "tourist trap" of not knowing.
