Texas Landscapes : All photographs are for sale; 8X10=$25, 11X14=$35

Ask a Texan, "Where are you from?" and he might reply, "Texas! What country are you from?" Texas is so big and diverse it's like a small country. The landscapes vary from mountains to desert to plains, rolling hills to oak savannah to piney woods and miles and miles of Gulf coast. Before leaving Washington,DC, Davy Crockett said,"You may all go to hell, I'm going to Texas." Davy never got to see the entire state before he met his demise at the Alamo but others such as Sam Houston said it for him.

San Jacinto Monument - Battleship Texas & Fred Hartman Bridge : The San Jacinto Monument stands 567 feet high. It is an octogan column that is topped with a 220-ton star that commemorates the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. The monument was constructed between 1936 and 1939 and dedicated on April 21, 1939, is the world's tallest monumental column and is part of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site. The column is made with Texas shellstone, topped with a 34-foot Lone Star - the symbol of Texas. Hey! This thing is taller than the Washington Monument but we always try and do things bigger and better in Texas.

The Texas State History Museum, Austin, TX, July 17, 2009 : 28 Kleb Woods travelers made a bus trip to Austin to tour the Texas State History Museum. We left Cypress Top at 7:30 and arrived at the museum at 9:45. Our tour guide was Doyle Carter, age 81. He took us around the three floors in a hour in time for most folks to see the IMAX show. Lunch was at the Museum cafe and we had three hours of free time to see the exhibits we whizzed by. These bus trips are a lot of fun for the retire folks of Kleb Woods.

Painted Churches of Schulenburg, TX : If you've ever gone to Europe and visited some of the Baroque churches of Germany, Italy, Austria, and or Czechoslovakia you observed that the walls and ceilings were painted with elaborate designs. When the German and Czech immigrants came to Texas in the mid-1800's (my father's family included) they brought with them their Catholic religion and traditions. When they began to build places of worship, they attempted to replicate the churches of the old country. Schulenburg is located in Fayette County, Texas and it's where a large number of German and Czech's immigrated to and build farms, towns and churches. These "Painted Churches of Schulenburg" best exemplify the efforts of these early settlers to replicate the churches of the old country.

All the churches in this gallery are located around the town of Schulenburg, Texas.

Thursday night, November 12, 2009 my wife and her Portuguese teacher attended the Mariza concert at Jones Hall. I was elected to take them. After dropping them off at the concert I parked the car, got my trusty Leica Digilux 3, spare battery, tripod and cable release and began a WALK-ABOUT, photographing Houston landmarks, architecture and skyline. These are the photos from that walk-about.
