birdshooter > Remember the tip about light; the best light is often before sunrise.  Take a look at "Elk in the Mist" taken at Yellowstone National Park in September of 2001 along the Madison River.  It was cold and I was the only photographer out there that morning.  The bull elk above was trying to keep his cows together on the river bank.  The mist from the river and the predawn light makes the photograph. Get up early and get out there.

This photograph was originally a slide taken with a Nikon F100 and Nikkor 400mm f3.5 lens.  The usually crowded Yellowstone National Park was desolate at 5:30 in the morning.  Some of the best light of the day is before the sun comes up when the mist is rising from the warmer water of the river into the cold air and you have the whole park to yourself.

birdshooter > During the "rut" bull elk get very affectionate toward their cows.  These two were photographed on the edge of the Madison River.
birdshooter > Leaving Yellowstone one evening I saw this bull elk outlined against the night sky.  I quickly jumped out, set up the tripod and took this photo.
birdshooter > Along the Madison River elk herd at dawn and this bull elk is looking for some lonely cows.
birdshooter > This bull elk got a wiff of a cow elk coming into heat and he went looking for her.
