Mid-day light produces almost no shadows and no sense of depth. Landscape photographs are best captured in the early morning or late day.
Light clouds add a little contrast
Looking back at the bright top of the canyon, even a warming polarizer cannot cut the light enough. It is here I was wishing for a slit neutral density filter.

One of the creatures of the south rim is the Spotted Ground Squirrel. You can see them around the viewing area of Bright Angel Lodge. Look, but don't feed. The rangers will fine you.

One way of getting to the Grand Canyon is by rail. You can catch the train in Williams, AZ and arrive in the Grand Canyon Village area where there are hotels and transportation to get you around the park.
