Pinhao was a major storage and shipping river port for Portugal's port wine industry before modernization. With the building of roads and railway along the Douro River, these storage warehouses became obsolete. Before the roads and the railroad, boats would load up their wine cargo and head to Porto. The river was not controlled by locks and it was a dangerous journey for the wine boats. Today, these warehouses sit empty and just a reminder of the way things used to be.
