Pont des Arts (The Love Lock Bridge in Paris)
Story behind the Photo:
The Pont des Arts bridge over the Seine River in Paris WAS known as the love lock bridge. Thousands of padlocks were fastened to the metal grate sides of the bridge. Couples used to affix padlocks to the side grate and then throw the key into the river, sealing their love forever? You can make out the locks on the side of the bridge.
City officials were worried about the weight of these side grates and the possibility of them falling onto tourist boats going under them. So, in 2015, the City of Paris removed the panels with the locks. They estimated 45 tons of locks were removed from the bridge. I took this photo from one of the Seine River cruise boats four years before they were removed.
My wife and I were there in October 2011 for a week when we got a personal tour of the city by friends Michel & Chantal who live in a Paris suburb. The friends showed us the real Paris and we shall always remember their hospitality.
