Galveston's Pleasure Pier
Originally the pier was built as a recreational facility for the US military during World War II. It was transformed into the Galveston Pleasure Pier and became the center of entertainment for the Island drawing America's top dance bands to play at the enormous Marine ballroom.
It was a boon to the Island's tourism and commerce.
I can remember as a boy going into the Pier with my mother and brother to have some great seafood.
In 1961 Category 4 Hurricane Carla devastated the Pleasure Pier severely damaging the property. Four years after Carla, the Flagship Hotel opened on the once devastated property and once again the Pier became a catalyst for tourism. The Flagship remained on the Pier for forty years when another hurricane made its landfall near Galveston in September of 2008.
In 2009, Landry's Inc. built this amusement park and opened in May 2012. It has 16 rides, midway games, retail shops and many different food venues.
My thanks to John Murphy for his inspiration to photograph the Gulf using a long exposure. His photographs using ND filters are awesome. I've included a link to his portfolio and a gallery of my photos from Galveston. I would have had better images if I had not left my ND filters lying on the dryer as I left the house at 4am.
