Yesterday was cold and a light rain but it didn't keep us from seeing "Big Boy," the world's largest steam locomotive. So my brother and decided to make the short drive to Navasota, Texas and wait for it there.
Here is some info from Union Pacific RR:
Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s Completion:
Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014 is touring the Union Pacific system throughout 2019 to commemorate the transcontinental railroad's 150th anniversary.
The Big Boy’s return to the rails is the product of more than two years of meticulous restoration work by the Union Pacific Steam Team. No. 4014 is the world's only operating Big Boy locomotive.
We arrived in Navasota around 11am, three hours prior to Big Boy's scheduled arrival. We found a great place to park close to the tracks, went and had a light lunch and waited. About 12Noon the crowds began to form and hundreds of people began to pour into the little town of Navasota. By 1:15 there were over a thousand railroad fans lining the barricades as Big Boy rolled into Navasota amid smoke and steam and that whistle and bell. Big Boy did not disappoint us. It stayed for 35 minutes and as it entered Navasota, it departed Navasota with steam and smoke. To top off the day we stopped at Waller County Line Barbeque and had a sliced brisket sandwich.
Good luck to Frank Pharis, as he will greet Big Boy in Oklahoma.
Definitely not a Sparrow! The Old Men with Cameras Group chased Big Boy yesterday along with hundreds of other train aficionados. The old men had fun!
