The Freinet Children’s Door:
The designs on the walls surrounding the door are originals drawn by children attending “L’Ecole Freinet”, a particular type of school in the 20's and 30's. Monsieur Celestin Freinet (1896-1966) was a local French educator who developed and implemented the idea of "learning by doing". He believed in "the free expression of children." He was very progressive for his time. Today there are now schools named after him throughout France, Germany, and Spain. His philosophy was somewhat like the Montessori teaching methods. Freinet's wife opened a "Children’s' Museum" ("Musee des Enfants") in Coursegoules in 1959. The bas reliefs of that house are taken from the drawings of the children her husband taught between 1920 and 1935.
