Notre Dame de la Garde
Marseille's iconic church watches over sailors, fishermen, tourists, and the entire city from its perch above France's second largest city. The site was originally a military observation post to protect Marseille from invasion.
The church began as a small chapel and then in 1853 this basilica was built. It is a blend of Roman-Byzantine architecture with domes, multi-colored stones, gold, and mosaics.
My wife and I were here five years ago and this is one of many photos I took of the church. I thought I looked better in black and white.
