Aransas County Courthouse Front View
Aransas County Courthouse, Rockport, Texas
Aransas County is on the Texas Gulf coast approximately halfway between Galveston and Brownsville. Aransas County is home to Aransas National Wildlife Reserve, the winter home to migrating Whopping cranes.
There is nothing spectacular about this courthouse. Kelsey and Dyal call it “motel style” Modern architecture. It is a one story, very “plane jane,” courthouse built in 1956 of brick and steel.
In that same year a historic 1889 courthouse designed by legendary architect, J. Riley Gordon, was razed. It was his only courthouse designed in Moorish style.
There are two memorials on the courthouse grounds. Both memorials are for DPS troopers killed in the line of duty; Richard Dale Berens, killed in 1963 and Harry Lee Mills, Jr. killed in 1965.
